For as long as I can remember I’ve enjoyed Michael Jackson’s music.  I got to know his songs growing up when my parents would listen to his Off the Wall, Thriller, and Bad records.  As a kid I loved singing (and sometimes dancing) along to the songs and now as I listen from a different perspective, I love Quincy Jones’ polished pop production, the layers of percussion grove and single-note funky guitar lines, and the sick R&B basslines. 

And his songs are instantly recognizable–think of the first few seconds of ‘Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough,’ ‘Rock With You,’ or ‘Billie Jean.’  His style’s often been emulated, but still nothing sounds like an MJ song (I will say Maroon 5’s latest record  comes close).

And as if pioneering a new genre wasn’t enough, he pretty much invented a new style of dance that people are still trying to figure out. 

AND, I haven’t even mentioned the amazing things he did with Jackson 5 in the Motown days: ‘I Want You Back’ ‘ABC’ – forget about it.

So in honor of the King of Pop, here’s my favorite song and a video of some of his greatest moves..

Some final thoughts.. His death has been a sobering reminder of how fleeting life is (Psalm 144) and even more so how fame and riches ultimately amount to nothing (Proverbs 23). Pray for MJ’s family and that God will use this for his own glory.
