How do you buy your music?

itunes

I recently saw a video from an artist promoting her new album where she said that if you bought it on iTunes there would be a few bonus songs and video.  More and more artists seem to be doing this as a marketing strategy – browse iTunes and you’ll see albums with bonus tracks, acoustic versions and music videos.  But if you pick up the CD in the store all you get are the standard tracks.

Even though that’s their perogative as the artist, part of me gets a little irked at this.  Who needs an incentive to buy songs on iTunes?  The majority of people seem to download music anyway, so why not reward those who make the effort to actually buy the physical CD in a store?  I’m not an iTunes snob and I’ve downloaded my fair share of music, but I always prefer to buy the CD if I can find it.  Why not show a little love for this dying breed?

How do you buy your music?  I won’t judge.. :)

I have to say that I buy most of my music off of Amazon MP3. They were ahead iTunes in regards to DRM-Free MP3 files. Amazon MP3 will usually have the same if not cheaper prices than iTunes and they try to do a Deal of the Day which is really hit or miss. It has been missing A LOT lately. What about vinyls? Do you try to purchase those if artists release their music on them? I know that is starting to come back. Radiohead, MuteMath and others have released their latest albums on vinyl.

i need to check out amazon mp3.

i have quite a bit of vinyl, though only a few modern records (coldplay – parachutes..). schoolkids has a lot of new stuff but it’s pretty expensive (at least $20 an LP).

i will say that buying real CDs isn’t always more expensive than mp3s if you shop around and you can find killer deals on used CDs on Amazon. i’ve gotten them as cheap as $1.00 before.

thanks for the input william.

I only buy music on CD. Three reasons:
1) Better sound quality.
2) If my computer crashes I don’t lose it.
3) I am a snob.
