back in the studio with daniel renstrom

this past weekend daniel renstrom flew into town and we continued recording for the upcoming Jesus Wants My Heart full-length. daniel brought musical genius (and my bro-in-law) brentice bush along and the three of us tracked vocals, keys, and some guitars at the beehive. praise God our time was super productive and the creative juices were definitely flowing. i was so glad brentice was able to come and contribute his talents to the project. david spencer also came by to hang out, add some guitar, and inspire us (make us jealous) with his latest production.

can’t wait to finish up these songs and share them with you.  here are way too many videos from the weekend.. here are even more & here are some photos.

two new songs

recently i finished up two new tracks.

Whisper

the first is for an artist named David Wilkinson, a friend of mine. i had heard he was working on an original autobiographical rap song and approached him about working with him on it. after hearing the lyrics and the story behind it, i knew it was a deep track that needed to be as heavy and epic musically as it was lyrically. we went for an Eminem meets Explosions in the Sky meets Mat Kearney vibe and i built a beat & backing music behind a piano sample he had found. we worked on the vocal hook together and brought in the talented Diana Key to sing it for us.

the result is a gritty & melodic rap song that tells a redemptive story of how pain met grace in David’s life:

Sidewalk Reunion

the next song is the first single from a great new band called Robinson. it’s the first of 4 songs on en EP that we recorded over new years. we had a ton of fun recording the basic tracks live, all in the same room, and without a click. that made editing a challenge but provided some vibey leakage and kept the raw feel of a room full of guys playing a song. can’t wait to finish up the rest of the songs.
